Although I haven't read the book yet, I have analyzed its contents and thumbed through the layout and decided to come back and write a quick review to anyone interested in purchase. It's hardcover copy is almost twice the price but well worth it. With taxes you're looking at around 50$ CAD compared to the 26$ CAD soft cover version. The cover feels solid and very well made. It feels like felt cloth when you run your hands all over it, compared to that cheap cardboard feel with other books that just throw a sleeve on it. Compare this cover to Dante Alighieri's the divine comedy where the cover is similar in size but very cheaply made. This book is neither cheaply made nor is it poorly formatted and it's larger than expected (which is actually nice) because the left side is the original German and the right side the English.I can't comment on the story itself as I haven't read the Ring of the Nibelung, but I can say as an avid book reader that the layout and writing makes for a very considerate reading experience.Kudos to the people who formatted this masterpiece. The extra 25$ in price is worth it.

Professor Deathridge has done a marvelous job with this new translation, and the articles about the timeline of Wagner’s life and the synopses are essential reading. Highly recommended.

If you can't read German you really need a translation to have the foggiest idea of what is going on in the Ring Cycle. This book does just that.I bought this book to accompany a summers listening/watching the Ring Cycle on CD & DVD. As a newby to Wagner other than orchestral highlights the book did the job admirably. The introductory sections provided interesting information on aspects of the work as well as succinct synopses of each Act & Scene. The bulk of the work is of course the parallel translation of the four operas. These are a clear reading text in a type size that is readable, unlike that in CD boxes. Made it an easy task to keep place with the action while listening on CD. Inclusion of stage directions etc. made it easy to have a mental picture of the action. What this is not is a comprehensive discussion of the Ring Cycle or biography of Wagner. Then it doesn't set out to be. There are plenty of books out there doing that.My only criticism, and that's minor, is that nowhere could I find anything that told me who the editor/translator John Deathridge is. Not even the usual little bio in the front. Obviously this info is easily looked up but would have been nice to have had it included. All told would thoroughly recommend this book.
