Not well made

No instructions, not even a small peice of paper with a diagram, extendable, but collapses with the slightest of forward pressure, so not fit for purpose. Would definately not want to rely on this working when docking short handed.

This item should not be used as a boat hook as it would be useless for this task and could be easily damaged. It is used as a rope threader so that a line can be passed through a ring or around a pole. It does not give an impression of a top quality but functions well and is as described. Considering the cost it has to be 5 star. This item is said to be metal, other makes claim stainless steel but the material of the item supplies appears to be mainly non-magentic steel ie stainless steel.What to expectI did some research before buying and apart from the small package it was mainly as expected. This is one of two designs which I suspect are the same products sold under different names on Amazon and e-bay. From reviews of these other products some people seem to expect it to be made of thicker metal, better finished and similar to a boat hook. As you can see from the illustrations it is quite thin; I measured 2mm thick. It seems to be made mostly of stainless steel with rivets and fitting made of mild steel. There was a very slight sign of rust but that may be due to iron deposts from the punch tool or may be due to the quality of the steel. The edges are not smoothed and have a sharp feel but the price has to be considerred and could be improved with a file. The handle is of tubual stainless steel an, much thinner than a boat hook and collapses in multiple sections to only 16 inches; hence the small package. It extends to 4ft. Each extended sections needs to be twisted to lock and the hook should be screwed on tightly.FunctionI have lost an expensive and very robust boat hook in the past when the hook is engaged on a bouy and the boat is caught by a strong wind. Then the hook cannot be released and the boat hook is pulled too strongly to be held. This system is really a rope threader the rope is passed through the ring and pulled back to the boat; no force required. If for some reason you get into difficulty it should disengage easily for another attempt. The loose cross bar may be a concern but is an essential part and cannot be lost when in use as a rope is attached to it. When mouted on the hook the cross bar is easliy kept in position by keeping a slight tension on the rope. On pushing the cross bar on to a ring or a pole the cross bar swings inwards allowing the ring to pass into the hook body. The cross bar then swings back. A light pull back then causes the cross bar to be released from the other side so that the cross bar and rope is pullled though the ring. I was suprised how well this works trying it out on a number of difficult domestic rings and poles inculding the handle of a 5l water container. I does help to keep some slight tension on the rope so the bars swings back easily before pulling back on the pole.
