The reel has the necessary features for the beginner fisherperson who seeks only to fish live bait on a bobber, jig while trolling or perhaps tightline for crappie, stripe or catfish. However, if your fishing style includes a lot of casting, you'd be better off with a basic spinning reel.Using fresh Trilene 8 pound monofilament on a 7' carbon fiber baitcaster rod, after about 40 casts, the monfilament began to repeatedly get caught around the center spindle when releasing the button causing me to unscrew the cover and unwind the line. The first time this happened I lost a lure, but I kept fishing anyway as it was the only rod I had chosen to bring on my kayak that cold December day.Mind you, I think the Daiwa Spincast A-Series reel would be great for the average live bait fisher. It is built solidly and is fairly heavy. I recommend this reel as a suitable replacement reel for those who perhaps grew up fishing with Johnson Century spincasters as I did in my youth or for any occassional young fisher just getting started into some light fishing in ponds and streams.
