I loved Frankopan's first book, The Silk Roads, and The New Silk Roads was a great followup. The first one is a very global view of history, each chapter covering whatever the influence was at the time, moving through to the present. Then the second book picks up. The first book doesn't have to be read in order to read the second.

This book is a must read for every person and especially every politician in the western world, an eye opener if anybody was still not aware what's going on in front of our eyes at a mind-blowing pace.Rather than the old history of medieval kings and battles and all those distant chapters, books like this one is what our schools should teach and discuss, what our media should be exposing and elevating. We urgently need to agree what the reality is about the world we live in, about the capabilities and powers and stakes in the international arena.Change is happening and accelerating. The possibility of displacement is real, and the possibility of a sudden dislocation or clash are there. We need to me mindful of that, work to mitigate that, and prepare for a new world (that's already here...)

This is a smaller followup to the dauntingly researched first book The Silk Roads. That book is a refernce book lightened by slight, dry inserts of British humor. The New Silk Roads is more of an analysis of contemporary Western Civilization. It's not an analysis many Westerners are comfortable with, but it is well-considered.

Really enjoyed this book. Easy to read, engrossing, thought-provoking. Would definitely recommend.

For those who think that Human History goes from the Greek, through the Romans to the European Renaissance, the maritime discoveries and the industrial revolution, they missed a fundamental bloc of our common road: the world where everything happened before Europe mean anything. It was in the East where Human societies reached global power and intelectual sofistication.
