I have taught singing for years and guided many students through exams. This book is not appropriate for grade 1, unless gr 1 is much harder than any of the other exam boards. The songs are very hard for gr 1 and have complicated syncopation and the backing tracks that often don't have any pitch support (we will rock you is literally just rhythm!!, there isn't even a starting pitch!) How Far I'll Go is listed as gr 5 in ABRSM, Musical theatre board (I think) and I thought this version would maybe have an easier backing track that made it appropriate for gr 1. No!! There is nothing keeping the tempo so it's impossible for inexperienced singers to keep in time with the backing track. All my students became discouraged with this book because it was too difficult. Try Trinity Rock and Pop. The songs are much more appropriate for beginners. Or ABRSM musical theatre. Disappointing.
