If you're a fan of John Sayles or Mary McDonnell, or you simply like quiet, thoughtful films set in beautiful locations, this is a must-see. One of Sayles' best works in my opinion, Passion Fish tells the story of brash, selfish soap actress May-Alice (Mary McDonnell) who returns to her Louisiana home to recover from an accident that has left her paralysed from the waist down. How she adjusts to her physical condition with the help of a carer with her own baggage (the excellent Alfre Woodard) and learns to appreciate the people and surroundings of her childhood home, which she has turned her back on for so long, is at the core of the story. But this is a Sayles movie and around this moving central partnership he weaves side stories and colourful characters and comic dialogue and glorious scenery, all set to a toe-tapping, life-affirming Zydeco soundtrack. I love the montage where May-Alice rejects or scares off various carers, or the outrageous 'anal probe' monologue delivered by a fellow soap actress and I particularly liked May-Alice's gentle infatuation with a former teenage crush, the kind but very married handy-man Rennie (David Strathairn). Sayles made this after the sprawling, huge cast productions of Eight Men Out and City of Hope. He wanted it to be more intimate and more humorous and, to my mind, he achieves both these aims admirably.

I absolutely love this film. I'm a big Mary McDonnell fan and she is wonderful as former soap star May Alice, who is paralyzed in a car accident and moves back to her home town in Louisiana. After a succession of terrible live in nurses, Alfre Woodard's Chantelle arrives, with a few secrets of her own. This film has a fantastic sense of atmosphere and place, but it is the memorable scenes between the characters I loved. A cringeworthy visit from former school mates and a very funny visit from former cast mates stand out. For me, the potential love interests of the two ladies is less interesting, but it great performances all round - McDonnell was Oscar nominated but Woodard's quieter performance also stands out. I've been waiting for a decent Blu Ray release with some actual extras, but don't think it is going to happen so this import DVD was the only option. A hidden gem.

This film is a beauty! The director managed to create a very good atmosphere in this film and a very touching story. And the music in this film blends in so well. It's cajun music, and it really works. The part of the film where they make an extensive boatride on the network of rivers is so beautifully shot, and again, together with the music really sticks to mind. One funny detail that had me in stitches is that during a visit of ex-colleagues, a remark is made about a hysterectomy:"They took out the crib, but left the playpen!"Anyway, this film is a must see!

I cannot rate it 5 because the Spanish version is not "Spanish", but "South American Spanish", and this should be stated anyway in the Item Description. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed the film.Thank you.
