This is perfect for studying Palestrina. Like all Dover scores, it is well presented and clear to read.

Dover is a trustworthy source, as always, and you can never go wrong with Palestrina. I just wish they would release a "Complete Works" of Palestrina, with a cd or something! That would be great.

I was partly motivated to buy this Dover book of Palestrina scores by the Knud Jeppesen book, . Jeppesen analysed and documented very carefully the composition technique of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina in the 16th century, using as examples various motets, masses and other vocal pieces. It's great to see some complete Palestrina masses and motets after reading so many tiny snippets in the Jeppesen book. However, I could not find many direct quotes by Jeppesen from these masses and motets. I found the following.* Missa L'Homme Armé, Credo, bars 12-13, page 161, are quoted by Jeppesen on page 194.* Missa Papae Marcelli, Credo, bars 186-189, page 207, are quoted by Jeppesen on page 160.* Missa Papae Marcelli, Benedictus, bar 11, page 212, is quoted by Jeppesen on page 153.That's not really a lot, of course, but it is interesting to see how the quotes differ from these scores. Jeppesen uses the original C-clefs (which are difficult for modern people to read), whereas this Dover Palestrina book uses octavo G-clefs instead. Some people might find it odd that the Altus voices are in octavo G-clefs instead of untransposed G-clefs, but these are not alto voices, and the voice ranges fit very well indeed into the octavo G-clefs. The time-values are halved (replacing half-notes with quarter-notes etc.), which is probably a good idea for us modern people. These masses and motets are printed in spacious open score, nicely typeset throughout, although the printing is sometimes a bit thin, suggesting that the plates are getting a little weary. It is quite easy to "hear" these pieces by reading the scores because they are so clearly typeset. The contrapuntal relations between voices jump out from the page at you. The standard Dover binding is robust, as always,There are three motets (in 4, 6 and 5 voices), interspersed with 6 masses (in 4, 4, 5, 5, 5 and 6 voices). The motets are:* Veni Sponsa Christi (4 voices)* O Magnum Mysterium (6 voices)* Ascendo ad Patrem (5 voices)Now I just need to find some adventurous souls to sing them with me!
