Firstly, addressing the elephant in the room, it's a bit odd that most of the reviews for this are "Vine Customer Review of Free Product" especially given it's a specialist product, typically used in commercial buildings - not private homes (although kudos to those who've decided to install one near their fusebox - it does make a lot of sense really!)I needed several for a small theatre auditorium, and Amazon surprisingly offered the best price and fast delivery. The 1W (120lm) output is quite low by today's standards but in an auditorium where typically people's eyes have become accustomed to the darkness. For an office building or retail outlet where there is bright illumination that may fail, I would use the newer 3w units, some of which achieve over 300lm output. It was also important for our application to ensure that the green charge LED was discreet (some of the smaller units incorporate the charge LED behind the lens of the white light, which can illuminate the whole room in a distracting green glow!) and that it has *NO SELF TEST* (an asset for us, this might be a negative for some users)For 0.5 Lux illumination from a 3m ceiling these can be spaced 11.2m apart, from a 4m ceiling it's 11.8m, so a small number will cover a large areaInstallation was simple, the light retains it's full brightness for the full 3 hour run time required, and it's discreet enough on the ceiling (although a black option would have been nice!)One negative is that the beam pattern is very uneven. It does provide adequate light over a wide area, but there are are 'hot spots' notably in a brighter ring of light near the edge of the beam - it doesn't affect it's use for the purpose, but if you're particularly obsessed by aesthetics then this could be an annoyance for some. For us, it serves the purpose, the battery is easily replaced, and it's a great product for the price.

The idea behind this non maintained emergency downlight is that in the event of a power failure, the circuitry will detect this and immediately illuminate, providing light for up to three hours. Accordingly, this light will not be illuminated for the majority of the time and it does not function as a normal light. This is different to a maintained light, which will be illuminated continuously, including in the event of a power failure. This particular downlight is integrated, meaning that you will need to cut a hole in the ceiling (40-44mm) and insert the battery pack and light, using the spring loaded clips (after wiring it into a permanent mains supply of course). Whilst it is designed to provide light for three hours after a power cut, it should be noted that this relies on a battery to do so and like all batteries, they deteriorate over time. The instructions recommend that the battery is replaced every four years however, I'm not sure whether a replacement battery can be purchased or if the entire lighting unit needs to be replaced.Given the expense which is light to be involved in keeping these lights in full working order, there are only likely to be useful where it is essential for there to be a source of light in all circumstances e.g. a public space like a hospital. For a domestic situation, they are likely to be overkill, particularly given that we don't tend to experience many power cuts in the UK.Provided that you know what you are doing, it is relatively easy to install, as once it has been wired into the mains, you only need to connect the light to the battery pack. Accordingly, it's no more difficult than installing a normal light fitting however, the question you need to ask is whether you really need it.

What you get with this Luceco LED Emergency downlighter is a very well made and very affordable light that is as easy to install as any other. We have installed this in the corridor near our front door to provide lighting if the power goes off. It works very well on our tests and I'm thinking about installing another couple in strategic places around the house.

Bang. The electricity goes off at night, and you're left plunged into darkness, a hot coffee in your hand, toddlers running around crashing into things, no idea where there's a torch, or how to get to the fuse box without tripping over. This initial state is when accidents and injuries occur. What do you do?If you have one of these lights fitted, you'll never have to face this type of problem, because it automatically switches on when the power goes out. It stays on for a whole three hours, too - hopefully enough time to fix the electrical problem, and certainly enough to locate candles or lanterns.I fitted mine in the hall, by the stairs. It's pretty bright when activated, and provides plenty of illumination to the centre of the house, allowing safe use of the stairs and easy location of both exits. There's also enough light spill to navigate slowly but safely through rooms when their doors are wide open. So, just one light provides a very reassuring safety feature covering my entire house, both downstairs and up. Having said that I'm impressed enough to order another and fit it to the upstairs landing, as at least one per floor is preferable I think, with one in each reception room plus the kitchen a good safety idea too.The unit is built to a high standard and is easily fitted. It simply wires in to a constant feed from the lighting circuit, and taking a spur off an existing light fitting is easiest. The battery trickle charges constantly and the light automatically activates if the feed power cuts out. The battery is a long sausage shape which you feed through the hole before popping the small and very neat light into place. No maintenance is necessary, and this unit gives me wonderful peace of mind. In an ideal world it would be a safety requirement for every home to be fitted with these, together with the fire detectors, one per floor at the minimum, in the landings and halls. Unless you want waking up, I don't recommend placing them in bedrooms though. Highly recommended!
