After having planned my travels around the world with Lonely Planet since 2003 I'm so sorry to say that an era is now over. Their new editions are just completely useless, and I will never ever buy a Lonely Planet again. The reason why I have bought Lonely Planet over the years is that they have provided me with super useful and practical info that has saved me a lot of time when planning my trips. Such as for example:- topographical maps that gave an instant overview of what to expect of the landscape- info about how to get around easily with public transport between the most commonly visited cities, villages and sites - including info on number of daily connections, approximate prices etc- similar info about trains, boat and flights. Back in the days there were even illustratrative maps showing the most frequent flight routes in South East Asia for example- opening hours and entrance fees to different sites of interestNow all of the above is gone. Instead you will get info along these lines (quoting "Find your way" around Algarve in this edition of Lonely Planet Portugal):1. BUS: "Vamus Algarve provides a decent (if sometimes delayed) bus service across the Algarve, complemented by local municipality buses in the main cities. Buses give better access to beaches and smaller villages than trains, though schedules are often commuter-focused, requring some forward planning" (I'm not joking, these are their exact words!)2. TRAIN: "The Algarve's ageing trains trundle along at a sightseeing pace between Lagos in the west, to Faro, and then to Vila Real de Santo António in the east. While most stations are conveniently located, others (Albufeira, in particular) are too far from the destinations to walk (No, I'm still not kidding!)3. CAR (!): "With four wheels you'll be free to dictate your own schedule. Secluded bays, countryside quintas (vineyards) and hard-to-reach hiking trails become easily accessible. Toll roads are (slighlty) faster. Taxis (and apps such as Bolt and Uber in cities) provide an alternative for occasional remote visits" (Is this for real???)Apparently Lonely Planet think that we shall all abandon silly things like public transport and rent cars instead. How very contemporary.Bye bye Lonely Planet. I'm so sad to let you go, but there is just no other way.

After 30 + years as a faithful Lonely Planet traveller to 40 + countries, I quit. Recently purchased new format last issues of Iceland and Portugal: lots of beautiful colour photos and useful information at a bare minimum. The portuguese one doesn't even include Batalha!!! More an inflight magazine that good old Lonely Planet quality. From now on Rough Guides will be my travel companions.

This book met the need, including lots of helpful info that allowed us to make informed choices on where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do there. We had a great trip! I purchased 2 travel guides for Portugal and much preferred this one. I was surprised because I've used the other company many times before. But this time, they just didn't do a great job. I'm glad that LP did!

Kein Wunder.
