No issues with the build quality. Tone is a personal thing so can't really comment except to say that I prefer my 40-year old Distortion Plus so I've already resold this in the used market.

I love this overdrive! I know that it has distortion III written on its smokin' red exterior but it is an overdrive in my book. it has a great smooth drive which sustains very well.I would say that this pedal stands out from others because of its vitality and uniformity. Some guitar pedals need to be on that ONE setting to sound good or can't be played with this or that pedal. MXR built a pedal that can enhance anything you are doing! This pedal is used to take anything that I am playing up one notch.You just can't go wrong with this amazing overdrive!

I picked one of these up after seeing that Keith Urban uses one (check out the interviews with his tech on Guitar.com) and loves it. Though its called a Distortion box its more of an overdrive, that said it can get pretty gained-out at higher settings. The tone knob can make some big changes as well, past twelve it really adds a lot of high end and openness. Below twelve you can definitely get some darker and thicker tones.I actually run it with the distortion all the way down and the tone just past noon, this gives me a nice overdriven tone with a little bit of hair that works with well with guitar volume adjustments. For the price, you can't do much better.
