And yet…there could have been more back story developed in the beginning. Lost opportunities with things inside Fyneshade …I won’t give away why, buts lots…And finally the end was rushed, I feel another lost opportunity was revenge to be taken for the woman who owned the “boarding house”.The story was staggeringly slow in the center and the monkey was way over played “pun intended”. Again just lost opportunity in the center to creep it up more and build. However due to this and the fact that the way things turned out was not a surprise, it was still a fun little vengeful read.

This book needs a trigger warning for child abuse, animal cruelty and abortion.Just boo. I have lost too much time reading this book, which is to say half a day.The plot twists were quite obvious, and the final shocking reveal is perhaps not a great shock given we never hear Marta’s surname and the epigraph is a quote of HJ’s.The thing is, there was literally no one to root for except the servants who were a bit too thinly drawn, and the dog. (Also, since when do Great Danes have shaggy heads and wiry coats?!)I read the book and basically my response can be summed up as … k.Or perhaps more accurately, “Cool story bro”.

I don’t like stories generally where there are no redeemable characters. The head housekeeper is the only tolerable one; even Grace is made into a gross caricature. Then again, to be a penniless woman in the 19th century meant few options. It is an engrossing novel in the Gothic tradition, and, by the end, I knew punishment would come. But how would it be enacted?

An elegant homage to the classic gothic novel style. It has all the elements; the young governess, the mysterious house, the absent owner, the strange child...and just a little magic! Nothing is as it seems.Lucid, accessible writing from Ms Griffin - who, joy indeed - has written tons of stuff. Fully recommended.

‘In a place where many fear to tread,She is the greatest threat of all…’ - cover tag line, ‘Fyneshade’ by Kate Griffin. The protagonist of this Gothic novel is Marta. On the day of her beloved grandmere’s funeral she is advised that her aunt has arranged for her to become the governess to the young daughter of Sir William Pritchard. She journeys to Pritchard's ancient and crumbling house, Fyneshade, in the wilds of Derbyshire. Marta discovers that ten-year-old Grace is practically non-verbal (she appears to have Downs Syndrome) and realises that it will be impossible to teach her.Marta is not particularly kind to the girl and is quite manipulative. Sir William himself appears to be mysteriously absent. She learns that Vaughan, his son and heir, is forbidden to enter the house. When Marta encounters Vaughan in the nearby woods, she is drawn to him despite the warnings of the housekeeper that he is a danger to all around him.We quickly become aware that Marta is no innocent. Her grandmother had been regarded as a witch and had taught Marta her art. So she’s certainly a match for the inhabitants of Fyneshade. No further details to avoid spoilers.I was impressed by this novel and it certainly ticked all the boxes that I look for in an atmospheric Gothic novel. Given that the Epigraph was a quote from Henry James’ ‘The Turn of the Screw’, Griffin appears to have been inspired by that iconic tale.Marta served as the novel’s narrator and she emerged as a complex, multilayered character. Yes, she was definitely flawed but throughout I was hoping that she would prevail.Overall, I found ‘Fyneshade’ an excellent read and was immersed from its opening through to the final page. I certainly will be interested in reading more of Kate Griffin’s work.
