Tank. An almost forgotten band. I first saw them supporting Motorhead. The album is a cut above the NWOBHM fare of the period, produced by "Fast" Eddie Clarke. I've been waiting for a CD issue of this LP for a long time as my vinyl is well paid. This and the second album "Power of the Hunter" are the best output from the band. If you liked early 80s metal chances are you'll like this

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal was one of the most fruitful and creative times ever for heavy rock music. It combined the influences of '70s hard rock and metal (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, '70s Judas Priest, et al.) with the D.I.Y. attitude, production values and aggression of punk. One band to truly capitalize on this was London's Tank, and after releasing the "Don't Walk Away" single in 1981 (included here) on their own Kamaflage label, the band entered Ramport studio in December of that year to record their debut full-length "Filth Hounds of Hades." You knew you were in the hands of greatness when Motorhead's "Fast" Eddie Clarke was at the production helm. And yes, there is a Motorhead influence present as many have said, and how could there not be, as Motorhead had essentially created what we know as speed metal on the previous year's seminal "Ace of Spades." But Tank are far from imitators and once you get past the similarities you see that they in reality had a unique and one of a kind sound. What I don't hear people saying as much is just how much later American thrash bands apparently borrowed from Tank. The opening of Metallica's "Hit the Lights" sounds strikingly similar to the opening of Tank's "Shellshock" and the main riff in "No Remorse" is a dead giveaway for that of track number three on "Filth Hounds of Hades," the awesome "Run Like Hell." But as great as Tank were, it's only natural the younger American bands would imitate their progenitors and NWOBHM heroes in this way.Getting back to the punk influence, it's no surprise that Tank would have one, as bassist and frontman Algy Ward had actually played on seminal British punk act the Damned's 1979 "Machine Gun Etiquette" LP. I would think that any fan of U.K. hardcore bands of the day like G.B.H. could also get into Tank, as shown on brilliant high velocity monsters as "Turn Your Head Around." This one features a classic riff and is guaranteed to get a slam pit going in no time. "Heavy Artillery" has that crunch-crunch guitar tone that was a precursor to thrash metal. But the band mixes it up as well, with catchy, more straightforward rock numbers like "That's What Dreams Are Made Of."This 2009 reissue on Metal Mind Poland is everything you could ever desire in a reissue. The gold CD features a brilliant 24-bit remastering job, with every note coming through clear as a bell and with a truly great sound. It comes housed in a gatefold LP-style digipak which contains a booklet with full lyrics. Finally, all early singles from around the time of the LP are included. All in all, if you are at all into the NWOBHM, Tank were one of the brightest and most high energy acts of the whole movement and this CD is therefore mandatory to anyone wishing to learn more about this bygone era of hard rock music.
