Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918).

This is a very good, powerful adaptation of Hemingway's novel - I spend a really good moment watching it, even if it is quite heartbreaking... It is also quite interesting as one of the few movies showing Worl War I on Italian front. Below, more of my impressions, with some LIMITED SPOILERS.World War I, 1917. Frederick Henry (Rock Hudson) is an American officer serving in an ambulance unit of the Italian Army. While recovering from a wound in a British base hospital in northern Italy, he is cared for by Catherine Barkley (Jennifer Jones), a Red Cross nurse he had met earlier, near the front. Step by step they become close. However, soon after that Austrians and Germans launch a devastating offensive which leads to the apocalyptic battle of Caporetto (24 October - 19 November 1917) - and then the story really begins...At 152 minutes this is a long movie, but as I was taken by the story, I really didn't see the time pass. I didn't read Hemingway's novel and I didn't see the previous 1932 adaptation (with Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes) so I had no idea how it will all end - and the second half of the film really kept me on the edge. It was a big budget production and you can REALLY see it on the screen. The scenes of battle of Caporetto and especially its aftermath are very powerful, poignant - and cruel... The unimaginable scale of Italian defeat (some historians call it "the greatest military defeat in Italian history") is shown without gloves and without mercy. Those scenes really marked me...Most of the film relies quite obviously on duo Rock Hudson-Jennifer Jones and I liked their performance. The fact that Jennifer Jones, at 38, was actually six years older than her partner doesn't hurt this film - at all! In fact it gives it more charm, by showing splendidly a romance between two fully adult people - who suddenly are stricken by love like two teenagers... It is quite well known that Rock Hudson, being homosexual, was not at all interested in women, but he was a really good actor - by watching him in this film nobody would guess where his real preferences were... Vittorio de Sica and Mercedes McCambridge, who play respectively the Italian officer who is Frederick's best friend and British head nurse who is Catherine's superior, offer also a great show. This is a drama so don't expect too much happiness at the end, but the film, although heartbreaking, is NOT depressing - the beauty of the romance somehow still remains with us, even after the last scenes... Well, at least this was my impression.Bottom line, this is a powerful classic and a really, really good film - to watch absolutely. I will definitely keep my DVD for another viewing. ENJOY!

Wow! What a movie! I've never heard of it before nor have I ever read the book it's based on. I am so glad that I took a gamble & bought this from Amazon to add to my new Old Hollywood DVD collection!I wanted to read other reviews before deciding to post one of my own. I wanted to see if anyone else had a similar issue to the film that I did. I thought that Rock Hudson was brilliant in this movie. Though some say that there was no chemistry between he and the lead actress Jennifer Jones, I agree, but not for the same reason. To me, Rock Hudson was there, on the mark, I felt the desire & love he had for her when he looked at her, when he spoke to her, when he would think about her or when he would talk about her to other characters. But on the flip side, for me, it was the actress that didn't deliver the chemistry. Though I am not familiar with her or any of her work, this is the only film I have seen her in. I didn't feel that she delivered the chemistry or the screen presence that the story called for. That aside, story wise, I loved it, heck, I even cried & I didn't see that coming. And the locations where they filmed are magnificent! Polarizing! So breathtakingly beautiful!!I don't know if this would have been a better casting choice for this particular picture but I would have loved to have seen Esther Williams in this with Rock Hudson. Maybe it was the scene on the lake in the row boat that made me think of her. I think one of the biggest missed opportunities is that Esther Williams & Rock Hudson never worked and made films together!! With their beauty & talent & style of acting, Esther Williams and Rock Hudson would have been a phenomenal pairing on screen!!
